The German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd Dog is categorized by the AKC as a member of the Herding Group. GSDs are medium to large-sized dogs. The breed standard height at the withers is 24–26 in. for males and 22–24 in. for females. The weight standard is 66–88 lbs. for males and 49–71 lbs. for females. The average life span of a German Shepherd Dog is 10-12 years.

The color range for the shepherd includes: black and red, black and tan, black and silver, black and cream, grey, black, red and golden sables, and black. White GSDs are seen as well as a natural mutation called a "panda" shepherd. If you are considering having a German Shepherd Dog as a member of your family, you should be aware that they are double coated, heavy shedders and regular grooming is recommended. If you do not like dog hair in your house, this is not the breed for you!

German Shepherd Dogs are intelligent, energetic dogs who are most content when they have a lot of exercise and an opportunity to do a job, no matter how menial. When you adopt a dog from us, we highly recommend canine obedience training. Obedience is an activity that you and your new companion can do together, and it provides a common ground for communication and helps bond a strong relationship between you and your dog.

For the last century, German Shepherd Dogs have been consistently popular. Unfortunately, that popularity has sometimes led to indiscriminate breeding and in turn led to the exacerbation of some health issues. Health problems that can occur in GSDs include: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, bloat and hemangiosarcoma, among others.
